CEASEFIRE ANNOUNCEMENT: U.S. President Trump stated that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire starting Tuesday at 5:00 PM EST following direct conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Netanyahu.
He said U.S. officials, including the Vice President, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have been tasked with working with both sides toward a longer-term arrangement.
▪️ DIPLOMATIC CONTEXT: The announcement follows a meeting in Washington between Israeli and Lebanese representatives, the first such engagement in 34 years.
Trump said he plans to invite Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Aoun to the White House for further talks aimed at advancing a lasting agreement.
ISRAELI POSITION & MILITARY POSTURE: Israeli officials indicated that IDF ground forces are expected to remain in southern Lebanon during the ceasefire, with the framework focused on halting airstrikes.
An Israeli official stated there are no plans to withdraw forces, and Netanyahu told ministers the IDF will maintain its positions under a format similar to the November 2024 arrangement, including authorization to act against emerging threats.
▪️ CABINET TIMING & INTERNAL PROCESS: Prime Minister Netanyahu convened a security cabinet call to discuss the ceasefire and a possible vote.
According to Axios, ministers were informed of Trump’s announcement during the call, before substantive discussion had begun.
▪️ NORTHERN LEADERSHIP RESPONSE: Moshe Davidovich, head of the Mateh Asher Regional Council and chairman of the Confrontation Line Forum, criticized the announcement.
He said a ceasefire without strict enforcement against Hezbollah and without a security zone up to the Litani River leaves northern communities exposed and does not provide real security.
