 HORMUZ AS A DIGITAL CHOKEPOINT:
Tehran warned that submarine cables in the Strait of Hormuz are a vulnerable pressure point for the region’s digital economy. The warning highlights that critical data infrastructure, not only shipping, could become a target.

According to Reuters, multiple fiber-optic cables pass through Hormuz, linking India and Southeast Asia to Europe via Gulf countries and Egypt. The International Telecommunication Union estimates that submarine cables carry roughly 99% of global internet traffic.

Damage to these cables could slow or cut internet access, disrupt cloud services, delay financial transactions, and affect global commerce. Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, rely heavily on these networks after major investments in AI and digital infrastructure.

Key cable systems crossing Hormuz include AAE-1, FALCON, and GBI, with additional networks under development.

Submarine cable failures occur at a steady rate of 150 to 200 incidents annually, with 70 to 80 percent caused by accidental human activity such as fishing or ship anchors. Natural hazards and environmental conditions also pose risks despite mitigation measures such as burying and reinforcing cables.

The ongoing Iran-related conflict, now nearing two months, has already affected regional infrastructure, including reported damage to Amazon cloud data centers in Bahrain and the UAE. While cables have not been directly hit, indirect risks are increasing due to military activity in the area.

Damaged or drifting vessels in active combat zones may unintentionally sever cables by dragging anchors. A similar incident occurred in the Red Sea in 2024, when a struck commercial ship cut cables while adrift.

Any disruption would depend on redundancy and alternative routing, but repairs in conflict zones face delays due to security risks, naval mines, and insurance constraints. Even minor damage could take time to restore under active military conditions.
