⚓ ALTALENA LOCATED AFTER 78 YEARS: At 12:30 a.m. on August 24, the Altalena was located intact at a depth of 503 meters west of Israel’s coast during a complex maritime search operation. Approximately ₪1 million was invested in the search, whose completion was announced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu.
The Altalena was an Irgun ship that arrived during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence carrying immigrants, fighters, weapons and military equipment. A dispute developed over control and distribution of the weapons. The Irgun sought 20% for its units still operating independently in Jerusalem, while the provisional government required the weapons to be handed over to the IDF. The confrontation culminated on June 22, 1948, when IDF fire struck the vessel off Tel Aviv and it went up in flames. Sixteen Irgun members and three IDF soldiers were killed. Menachem Begin urged his followers not to retaliate, helping prevent the confrontation from expanding toward civil war. About a year later, the burned-out hull was refloated, towed farther offshore and scuttled.

️ NETANYAHU INSTRUCTS SHIN BET TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE SECURITY FOR EISENKOT: This evening, the Prime Minister instructed the head of the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) to ensure that Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot receives security “at an appropriate level, as needed.” He was informed that the Shin Bet is doing its utmost and operating in accordance with the rules and the law.
