The IDF said Northern Command and the 36th Division secured operational control of Ali al-Taher Ridge and dismantled Hezbollah’s underground infrastructure overnight after clearing the Beaufort Ridge tunnel network. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir visited with Northern Command chief Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo and division commander Brig. Gen. Yiftach Norkin.
Speaking beneath the ridge, IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said the network was built over two decades with Iranian funding and direction. It served as a central command complex and Badr unit center, directing Hezbollah’s southern Lebanon fighting during Operations Northern Arrows, Roaring Lion and current operations.
⚔️ Defrin said a diversion saw division troops cross the Litani River and capture Beaufort Ridge from an unexpected direction, surprising Hezbollah. Commando Brigade and Yahalom engineering troops cleared and prepared the underground routes for dismantlement.
After months of encirclement and pressure, terrorists attempting to leave or resupply those inside were eliminated in air and ground strikes; some fleeing terrorists were eliminated in ambushes and close-quarters combat, Defrin said. All inside were eliminated or fled. “Despite Hezbollah’s declaration that it would defend the infrastructure at any cost, it failed and even abandoned its personnel to die inside.”
Defrin said troops found numerous abandoned weapons, including Iranian arms. Zamir said advanced Iranian-made weapons were intended to target troops and northern communities, describing central command, control and combat infrastructure built over years at enormous cost with Iranian assistance.
Defrin said the findings further showed Hezbollah operating as Iran’s arm, accusing the regime of using proxies to undermine Israel’s security and regional stability. Zamir said Hezbollah began war in the north after Hamas’ October 7 attack and was destroying Lebanon as Iran’s emissary. Warning that villages hosting terrorists and infrastructure put themselves at risk, he cited damage to entire villages in Qantara and Majdal Zoun because an underground terrorist city was built beneath civilian homes. He said the Ali al-Taher investment came at Lebanese civilians’ expense and was wasted.
️ Zamir pledged to prevent Hezbollah rebuilding or reestablishing itself locally: “Any attack on the communities in northern Israel or on the IDF troops defending them will be met with an immediate and forceful response.” He said the Lebanese Army must demonstrate effectiveness on the ground for the Israel-Lebanon agreement to advance.
Recent operations supported his directive to dismantle the infrastructure by Rosh Hashanah eve and redeploy locally. “The Yellow Line remains fully under our operational control, with no change.” He said continuous assessments prioritized troop safety, integrating intelligence, operational, ground, aerial and logistical capabilities.
Defrin pledged continued operations to remove threats to civilians and troops: “Just as we operated here, we will continue to operate along all of our borders.”
Defrin honored soldiers who fell capturing and clearing the ridge, praised their courage and commitment to northern communities, and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. “We completed the mission; these achievements belong first and foremost to them,” he said. Zamir credited troops’ courage, determination and dedication, saying the entire IDF remains on guard as the new year begins, from frontline positions to headquarters and command centers.
The IDF presented an illustration of division operations on both ridges, Yahalom body-camera and underground drone footage, and footage it described as showing Hezbollah terrorists’ elimination inside an underground tunnel shaft.
