⚠️ Emergency signals raise hijacking concerns: A commercial aircraft carrying more than 180 passengers reportedly issued a general distress call when it was about an hour and a half from landing in Israel. Initial details of the incident were cleared for publication by the censor.
Flight-tracking data showed the flydubai aircraft transmitting a “squawk code” of 7700, an international general emergency signal. According to the reported sequence of events, it subsequently transmitted code 7500 for “unlawful interference,” the code used to indicate a hijacking.
Reports said no contact had been established with the aircraft since that signal. A potential hijacking remains a concern, and all possibilities are being investigated.
✈️ Diversion to Saudi Arabia and subsequent course change: Initial reports described a flight from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv that was diverted to Saudi Arabia. Another account identified it as a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv and said it signaled an emergency while turning around over Saudi Arabia. The accounts differ on its departure airport.
A subsequent report said the aircraft had changed course back toward Israel but remained within Saudi airspace. The plane was also reported to have disappeared from flight-tracking apps.
️ Fighter jets scrambled as Israeli leaders consult: Israeli Air Force fighter jets were scrambled toward the aircraft, according to security sources. At the time of the reporting, Israeli authorities had been aware of the incident for about half an hour.
The Prime Minister and Defense Minister are holding an emergency consultation with senior defense officials. It remains unclear whether the aircraft will be permitted to land in Israel before authorities determine what is happening on board.
