❗️ Israeli authorities investigate suspected attempt to crash aircraft: Following situation assessments and passenger testimonies, Israeli authorities are treating the FlyDubai incident as a terrorist attack. The co-pilot reportedly stabbed the captain repeatedly. Crew members and passengers managed to break through the cockpit door and subdue the attacker.
“A major disaster was narrowly averted. The co-pilot is currently being questioned, and there are growing indications that he intended to take control of the plane and crash it with the passengers on board,” a senior Israeli official told Israeli Channel 12.
Authorities are investigating the suspicion that the pilot involved in the stabbing is from a Gulf state. Israeli media report that the co-pilot is of Omani origin.
️ Official says additional pilots took control: A senior Israeli official told Channel 12: “There was another crew of pilots on the plane as part of a training exercise, and they took control of the situation. That was the flight’s luck — otherwise, we could have ended up in a situation similar to 9/11”.
Channel 12’s Yaron Avraham described the sequence: “One pilot stabbed the other and was trying to do 9/11 inspired attack. Either hijack the plane to the ground or crash it. The plane begins to dive. There is another team of pilots there who take over the stabber. The team takes over the plane. A dramatic disaster is averted,” he said.
“This is the great stroke of luck for this flight; otherwise, we would be dealing with an event reminiscent of September 2001 or July 1976,” a senior Israeli official told Channel 12.
✈️ Rescue flight to Saudi Arabia: Israeli flag carrier El Al offered to dispatch a rescue flight to Saudi Arabia, which would be the first such flight in the airline’s history. However, Israel currently appears set to send an Israeli Air Force aircraft instead, according to Channel 12.
