️ Passengers and pilots stop attempted crash: According to Amit Segal, the co-pilot stabbed the captain in an apparent attempt to crash Flight 1073. He appears to have brought the weapon aboard himself, but it remains unclear whether he used a knife or an axe. Thirty passengers were children.
A female passenger said: “I didn’t pray for the plane to be saved, only for it to be over quickly, so that the children wouldn’t suffer. There was complete unity among all the passengers.”
A pilot opened the cockpit door moments before collapsing. Yaniv, Assaf and Tzvika happened to be at the front of the aircraft, while British pilots were also aboard and eventually took over and landed it.
Yaniv said: “I pulled back on the controls and stopped the plane’s dive. Good thing I watched ‘Air Crash Investigation.’” Segal’s commentary separately describes Yaniv pushing the controls forward.
Assaf Rejwan said they restrained the terrorist for 55 minutes and that the British pilots needed time to regain their composure before landing. The rescuers also said the attacker asked them to kill him after realizing he had failed.
Segal credited the opened cockpit door, the passengers’ intervention, the British pilots’ presence and Yaniv’s familiarity with the aviation program as essential to averting a crash in the Saudi desert. He also suggested that a wreckage search would have depended on the Saudi ruler’s permission.
️ Recognition for the rescuers: Netanyahu met Yaniv and thanked an Indian pilot for saving lives.
The president will recommend awarding the “President’s Medal for Civilian Heroism” to four rescuers from the Dubai flight: Yaniv Hayon, Dr. Shota Musaev, Tzvika Mans and Assaf Rejwan.
Segal’s satire on political and media framing: In a satirical post, Segal imagined reactions from Mamdani, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Al Jazeera and The New York Times.
Mamdani’s mock reaction portrays Israelis’ entry into Saudi Arabia as illegal and connected to a vision of Greater Israel. The European Union example treats the cockpit attack as mutual violence, while the United Kingdom example proposes sanctions against Israelis depicted as extremists for entering the cockpit and handcuffing a Muslim.
The Al Jazeera example invents an Israeli attack killing 27 children and six pilots. The New York Times example frames the near-crash over Saudi Arabia as a confrontation between Israelis and Muslims. His satire criticizes framing that obscures the attempted attack, recasts the rescuers as aggressors or invents casualties.
