 October 7 findings and wider war review: Three years after the Simchat Torah massacre, the IDF said it concluded its October 7 investigations at a senior commanders’ conference held Sunday at Glilot, led by Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. Commanders ranked brigadier general and above from all commands, directorates and branches attended. The conference opened with a moment of silence for those killed in the massacre and reviewed key findings, implementation of lessons and oversight mechanisms, alongside commanders’ remarks and plans for further investigations.

The conference marked the first stage of a broader investigation of the war, including Operation Roaring Lion. Further investigations will conclude in the coming period, followed by a consolidated review of the war’s lessons. Zamir designated 2027 as the year for investigating the war as a whole and drawing theater-specific and IDF-wide lessons to improve competence and readiness. He said concluding investigations and implementing their findings were critical to shaping the IDF’s strategy for the day after, emphasizing the duty to learn from the magnitude of the failure and prevent its recurrence.

 Zamir honors Unit 8200 soldier: Zamir awarded a certificate of appreciation to Chief Warrant Officer V. of Unit 8200, who warned before October 7 that Hamas was prepared for a large-scale surprise attack. Calling V. an example of intellectual courage and professionalism, he warned against people-pleasing discourse, intellectual tyranny and suppression of critical thinking. He said commanders must require freedom of expression as an essential part of the IDF’s operational culture.

️ Surprise-war readiness and force expansion: Zamir said the IDF’s strategy is being built around readiness for a surprise war, including preemptively thwarting severe threats as they develop. He called for expanding the military and adapting its force structure to growing missions and threats across multiple fronts. He argued that Israel’s small geography and lack of territorial depth require a greater margin of security: “The size of the IDF is our strategic depth.”

⚠️ Continued operations and heightened alertness: Acknowledging that “On October 7th, the IDF failed severely,” Zamir said it recovered and achieved what he described as a “historic and unprecedented multi-front victory,” crediting troops’ bravery and sacrifice, commanders’ leadership and cooperation between branches. He said the IDF continues operating in all arenas, defending forward and pursuing its enemies. “Whoever threatens to harm us and builds the capabilities to do so — we will act in advance and strike them with a decisive blow.”

Zamir stressed that the entire IDF remains on guard during a period of tension and heightened alertness, with every sector required to remain prepared. “It is our duty to prevent surprise and to prepare for surprise,” he said, expressing appreciation for commanders and units and concluding: “Let our actions speak for themselves.”
