National remembrance on 24 Tishrei: Israel is observing its official national remembrance day today, October 5, corresponding to 24 Tishrei, ahead of the October 7 anniversary. The annual observance follows the Hebrew calendar date established by the government in March 2024.
The massacre occurred on October 7, 2023, which was Simchat Torah in Israel, 22 Tishrei. The government designated 24 Tishrei for national remembrance, after the festival ends in both Israel and the Diaspora. Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs has explained that this keeps national mourning outside the holiday period, including the additional festival day observed in the Diaspora.
殺 Zamir acknowledges the IDF’s failure: In his commemorative order of the day, IDF Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir acknowledged: “The IDF failed in its most important mission to protect the civilians of the State of Israel.” He stressed the duty to investigate and implement the lessons to become more worthy of the public’s trust.
Recalling the breached borders and destruction across the kibbutzim and cities of the western Negev, Zamir said: “Our fields became battlefields, and family homes became sites of massacre and abduction.”
️ Remembering victims and supporting families: Zamir remembered civilians murdered in their homes, young people who went out to dance and never returned, hostages murdered in captivity, fallen soldiers and members of the security forces, and community security and rescue teams who fell in battle.
He expressed solidarity with the wounded, others harmed by the war and bereaved families. He pledged to preserve the victims’ stories and educate future generations of commanders and troops through their legacy.
Zamir also paid tribute to troops and commanders who fought under fire, reservists who repeatedly left their families to serve, and IDF civilian employees who worked beyond regular hours to support the war effort. He highlighted Israeli society’s unity, courage and commitment to helping its sons and daughters.
️ The campaign and future challenges: Describing the prolonged campaign that followed, Zamir said the IDF fought in arenas near and far, defended communities and borders, struck enemies, dismantled capabilities threatening Israeli civilians, rescued and returned hostages, and developed new ways to confront threats.
“We will not allow our enemies to strengthen undisturbed,” he said, pledging to identify emerging threats and strike them with determination and force.
Zamir pledged to carry forward the memory of the fallen and the lessons of October 7, strengthen the IDF for future challenges, preserve its values and spirit, and continue serving together as the people’s army. He said the goal was a future in which Israeli civilians live securely in their country and the Jewish people can never again be uprooted from their land. He closed with “Am Israel chai” and a blessing for the memory of the fallen.
Military ceremonies at 06:29: According to the IDF, military memorial ceremonies took place across all sectors at 06:29, the time the attack began on October 7, 2023. The General Staff Forum held a memorial ceremony and a moment of silence at Zikim Base.
Flags were lowered to half-mast during the military ceremonies, as well as at the President’s Residence and the Knesset.
⚠️ Netanyahu warns those who kidnapped Israelis: At the memorial ceremony for those killed on October 7, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said anyone who kidnapped Israelis was living on borrowed time.
