️ Security chiefs coordinate preparations for elections: In a joint statement, the IDF, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and Israel Police said Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Police Commissioner Daniel Levi and Shin Bet Director David Zini held a joint assessment across multiple arenas today, ahead of a sensitive period over the coming weeks.
The assessment reviewed intelligence along the borders and on the home front, alongside efforts to strengthen defense, combat terrorism and address nationalist crime. The chiefs agreed on immediate measures drawing on each organization’s relative advantages to ensure the orderly and secure conduct of the upcoming elections.
American tourist arrested near IDF headquarters: An American tourist was arrested near the IDF’s Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv after his behavior aroused suspicion among security forces. He had reportedly photographed the site and expressed an intention to carry out an attack.
Draft enforcement disrupted in Modi’in: The IDF said Military Police conducted proactive enforcement against deserters and draft evaders in Modi’in last night under the Defense Service Law. According to the IDF, a large number of people gathered and acted in an organized attempt to disrupt the operation, interfere with an arrest and endanger soldiers. Israel Police arrived to restore order and disperse the gatherings.
Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews broke into a police station overnight and forcibly freed a draft evader who had been brought in for detention. IDF soldiers were evacuated with police assistance, while the draft evader celebrated with those who had “freed” him.
The IDF described significant resistance and disruption to security forces’ activities. It strongly condemned attempts to interfere with or harm soldiers lawfully carrying out their duties and said enforcement would continue equitably, in accordance with the law and within its authority.
The IDF also acknowledged that it had not initiated arrests of draft evaders during the holiday period and announced that proactive enforcement would resume in October.
️ Bennett and Shas exchange proposals over eligibility for public office: According to Amit Segal, Bennett told a conference at Reichman University: “I’m revealing here one of our fundamental conditions for the next government: We will pass the ‘Deri Law,’ which stipulates that a draft dodger will not be allowed to sit in the Security Cabinet—anyone who dodged IDF service, or encourages draft dodging, will not be allowed to sit in the Security Cabinet.”
Segal noted that Deri had served in the army.
Shas’s Malkieli responded: “In the next government, we will pass the ‘Bennett Law’—a political scoundrel who steals the premiership with six seats, against the wishes of his voters, will not be allowed to run for the Knesset again.”
欄 Likud signs surplus-vote agreement with Religious Zionism: Likud and the Religious Zionism party signed a surplus-vote agreement. Otzma Yehudit said Likud had refused to sign an agreement with it.
Otzma Yehudit alleged that the refusal was part of an effort to weaken the party and keep Ben-Gvir out of a unity government it claimed Likud was planning with Eisenkot. The party said this matched remarks made yesterday by Likud candidate and former Labor Party MK Eli Goldschmidt.
