Defense Ministry rehabilitation figures: In a separate October 6 update marking three years of the “Revival” War, the Defense Ministry reported that approximately 30,000 wounded IDF and security forces personnel have entered its Rehabilitation Department since October 7, 2023. About 63% are coping with psychological reactions and 37% with physical injuries. Among the wounded, 47% are aged 30 or younger, 62% are reservists and 8% are women.
The department now treats 91,200 people from all of Israel’s military campaigns, including 42,500 coping with mental health conditions and post-traumatic stress, approximately 46% of the total. It estimates that approximately 100,000 wounded people will receive care by 2028, half coping with mental health conditions.
Among those wounded in the war, 63 have the most severe injuries and disability ratings of 100%+; 249 have complex head injuries; 29 have blindness or permanent visual impairment; and 106 have undergone limb amputations. Of the amputees, 95% have been fitted with innovative prostheses, including adaptations for extreme sports and leisure activities.
易 Rehabilitation reforms and mental health services: Following government approval in July of recommendations by the public committee chaired by Professor Mor Yosef, the ministry began implementing reforms centered on transforming the department into the “National Authority for the Rehabilitation and Treatment of Wounded IDF and Security Forces Personnel.”
Recommendations also include a personal contact for each wounded person, simpler injury-recognition and disability-assessment procedures, employment incentives supporting rehabilitation, a “Home for Life” for people with severe head injuries, and tailored support for lone soldiers and wounded women.
The department’s budget rose 88% over three years to NIS 10 billion, with more than 60% devoted to mental health and post-traumatic stress services and treatments. Approximately 171,000 alternative treatments were accessed this year. Currently, 470 emotional support dogs assist people coping with mental health conditions, with another 330 assistance dogs in training.
The ministry also reported approximately 2,300 practitioners and mental health treatments, triple the number at the war’s outset. Expanded services include rehabilitation farms nationwide, community “safe homes” and “stabilization homes” as alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization, and technological innovations for treating post-traumatic stress.
An emergency response vehicle and the Matan crisis team visit wounded people experiencing psychological distress at home. Established in January 2024, they have responded to more than 500 incidents requiring immediate intervention.
Education assistance and crisis support: Since the war began, 2,425 wounded men and women have received support and full funding for academic and vocational studies. Law is the most sought-after degree, followed by business administration and computer science. The department continues expanding education and vocational-training support to promote employment and rehabilitation.
The department’s “One Soul” mental health support and assistance helpline received approximately 16,500 requests over the year. Wounded personnel and their families can reach it at *8944, 24/7 throughout the year.
