 *U.S. STRIKE PREPARATIONS AGAINST IRAN REPORTED; BRITISH DIPLOMATIC PRESENCE IN JERUSALEM REDUCED*

 Reports describe possible U.S. strikes on Iran: The White House has asked the Pentagon to develop options for new strikes on Iran ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, although no final decision has been made, according to The Atlantic. Administration officials said President Trump wants to demonstrate progress in the war and help lower gas prices before the election. More extensive military action is also being considered for after the midterms.

Axios separately reported that the Pentagon has ordered CENTCOM to finalize preparations for possible major strikes. President Trump has neither made a final decision nor set a date, but U.S. and Israeli officials said strikes could occur before the November elections.

According to Axios, a renewed offensive could involve large-scale U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities, potentially prompting Iranian missile retaliation and driving up oil prices. U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations remain stalled. President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu have spoken twice by phone in recent days.

Israeli officials believe strikes are more likely after the midterms, although an earlier attack remains possible, Axios reported.

 British diplomatic presence in Jerusalem reduced: According to the report on Israel’s response to British sanctions, signs have been removed from the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, and British diplomats are being forced to leave. The consulate dates back to the 19th century, before Israel’s establishment.

The report says Israel and Britain agreed that seven diplomats could remain at the site in an office without consular status, despite Israel’s decision to close the consulate. The other 20 diplomats will be expelled.

The UK described the arrangement differently: “Following discussions with the Government of Israel, the Consulate General will not close but will instead be known as the British Mission from today. Over the coming months, we will work to rebuild our presence and will not take retaliatory measures as long as discussions on the matter continue in good faith. The UK remains firmly committed to the sanctions it announced on September 8.”

The report says Britain remains intent on pursuing sanctions through a process that will take 6–9 months, and attributes Israel’s closure decision to those sanctions. In exchange for allowing seven British diplomats to remain and downgrading Britain’s Jerusalem presence, the expulsion of Israeli diplomats from London will be canceled and talks will take place. The report says the British hope a new government will restore the consulate’s previous status.

Dermer supports Sa’ar’s decision to close the consulate while retaining seven diplomats. The accompanying analysis argues that this approach will minimize diplomatic damage while preserving Israel’s ability to respond to further British actions against Israel or improve relations if Britain changes course.
