✈️ Riyadh airport closed following deadly Houthi attacks: The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority reported another attack on King Khalid International Airport on Sunday afternoon, October 11. Saudi authorities said an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4, starting a fire that emergency crews were working to contain. Footage showed smoke rising in Riyadh.
The aviation authority said one Pakistani resident was killed and 11 people were injured in the Houthi strike. Damage assessments and safety inspections were underway in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Saturday’s Houthi attack on the airport killed at least 13 people and injured more than 300. Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya released footage of that strike. According to a NOTAM, the airport will remain closed until October 17.
️ Reports of Saudi air defense shortages: The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia faces shortages of interceptor missiles and other air defense systems amid sustained daily Houthi missile and drone attacks. The kingdom is struggling to adequately defend its airspace and has been redeploying air defense batteries to protect key energy facilities and royal palaces.
The newspaper also reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is moving cautiously between heavily guarded palaces equipped with bunkers, accompanied by a small group of handpicked security personnel.
Bloomberg reported growing Saudi frustration with limited military assistance from Western allies. The UK has provided an air-refueling aircraft, but Saudi requests for additional defensive support in recent weeks have yet to be approved.
Diplomatic responses to the Saudi attacks: The Saudi Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqhchi to discuss the regional escalation and efforts to address it. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Araqhchi conveyed Tehran’s readiness to help initiate talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the airport attack, extending Israel’s condolences to the victims’ families and wishes for the injured’s recovery. His statement cited 12 people killed and hundreds injured, differing from the reported toll of at least 13 deaths in Saturday’s strike.
Netanyahu said: “Terrorism targets innocent people and seeks to spread fear and instability. It must be confronted with resolve.” He also expressed hope for a Middle East united against threats, protecting its people and building a future of security, cooperation and prosperity for all the peoples of the region.
