Deadly explosion during school hike: A teenager was killed in an explosion near the Pe’er observation point in the Ramim Ridge area of northern Israel, close to the Lebanese border. Deputy Commissioner Meir Eliyahu, commander of the Israel Police’s Northern District, reported at the scene that 24 others were injured. The injured were schoolchildren and teachers on a hike.
Magen David Adom (MDA) had earlier reported 19 injured, including two in serious condition and three in moderate condition. MDA initially reported one person critically wounded before confirming a death. It also initially said it was assessing about 15 others in good condition, some of whom might require hospitalization.
Military and police suspect Hezbollah submunition: “An initial investigation by IDF forces at the site indicates that it was likely a cluster bomb belonging to the Hezbollah terror organization that had been left in the area and exploded,” the military said.
Israel Police Commissioner Danny Levi also told reporters at the scene that police sappers had determined the ordnance was likely a submunition from a Hezbollah rocket.
Eliyahu said the ordnance exploded “in the hands” of one of the schoolchildren hiking along the Naftali Mountains Forest scenic route. An earlier preliminary probe by authorities suggested that a schoolchild had picked up a submunition during the hike and placed it in his backpack before it exploded several minutes later. Channel 14 had also reported initial findings suggesting that a student may have carried an explosive device in a bag and that the device detonated while the students were near the road.
During the war in recent years, Hezbollah launched several Grad rockets carrying dozens of BRB1-type submunitions at northern Israel. These rockets scatter submunitions over wide areas, and the submunitions often fail to explode on impact.
The IDF says the incident remains under further review and army sappers are continuing to scan the area. The military deployed sappers from the elite Yahalom Combat Engineering unit to search for additional unexploded ordnance, along with medics and three Air Force helicopters to evacuate the wounded. Police sappers are investigating the circumstances, and IDF soldiers continue operations in the area.
Levi said the hike had been approved by authorities. He added that he would issue an order limiting hikes in the area for several days until the route is confirmed clear of any ordnance.
The IDF released footage of soldiers operating at the scene.
❌ Lebanese forces seize truck carrying explosives: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed that security forces seized a truck carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, including highly explosive C-4, a few days ago. He did not mention Hezbollah.
“C-4 has been used in several political assassinations in modern Lebanese history. We will deal decisively with any weapon outside the legal framework, whether in terms of possession, transportation or use,” Salam added.
