️ Election readiness and possible leave restrictions: The IDF chief of staff was reported to have ordered soldiers’ leave suspended on Election Day over concerns about possible escalation on several fronts. A military official, however, said the IDF was still examining whether to cancel leave for the October 27 election.
The official said the consideration was part of election preparations, not a response to a specific or immediate warning, but a “measure of readiness and alertness given the sensitivity of the period.”
In an official statement, the IDF said that, as part of its “ongoing assessment of the situation across all combat arenas, an alert order has been issued placing additional ground forces on standby.”
“A decision on the matter has not yet been finalized and will be finalized later this week,” the military added.
National and municipal election days are public holidays in Israel to encourage turnout. Amid the war that began on October 7, 2023, the military scrapped its decades-old practice of allowing large portions of the IDF to take leave simultaneously, usually on national holidays.
️ Government meeting arrangements: The government again met today at an undisclosed, secure underground location.
️ Military exercise in the Haifa area: An exercise will begin tomorrow morning and is expected to conclude Tuesday evening, the IDF spokesperson announced. Increased movement of security forces, vehicles and vessels will be noticeable, and gunfire and echoes of explosions will be heard in the area.
