️ Parties recommend Netanyahu and Eisenkot: Religious Zionism, the first party to meet Herzog, recommended Benjamin Netanyahu to form the next government. During the meeting, Herzog asked Struck how to distinguish between racism and the position against sitting in a coalition with Arabs. Struck replied that reality had made that distinction.
Shas also endorsed Netanyahu and called for a national unity government. Feiglin endorsed Netanyahu as well.
Ra’am and Yisrael Beiteinu recommended Eisenkot. Amit Segal assessed that Eisenkot would receive more recommendations than Netanyahu and would therefore be tasked with forming the government.
Yisrael Beiteinu’s Oded Forer said: “We have this characteristic: what we say before the elections, we also say after them.”
Herzog responded: “So what’s the solution? If you won’t sit in a coalition with this party, or that party, or the other party—where does that lead?”
Segal noted that Lieberman had opposed forming a coalition with the ultra-Orthodox parties both before and after the elections.
Five of United Torah Judaism’s seven members will refrain from making a recommendation, while Porush and Stark were still considering endorsing Netanyahu. This is the first time in twenty years that United Torah Judaism has not endorsed Netanyahu.
The Yashar Party announced that it had completed a first round of negotiations with all parties in the change bloc, with the aim of forming a national emergency government as soon as possible. Additional meetings were scheduled to continue the talks.
️ Shas denies Deri resignation reports; Deri accepts sages’ directive: Earlier reports said Shas’s Council of Torah Sages would discuss Aryeh Deri’s request to consider stepping down as party leader, with the discussion expected to conclude with his resignation from the Knesset while remaining party chairman.
Shas subsequently said: “The reports published in the media today, claiming that Shas chairman Rabbi Aryeh Deri informed the Council of Torah Sages in a letter of his resignation from the Knesset and from his position as party leader, are false.”
Later reporting indicated that the council meeting might not take place that day. Shas Knesset members left the President’s Residence without stopping to speak to the media.
Deri then issued the following statement: “Throughout my life, I was raised and educated to obey the guidance of Torah sages. This is how I have conducted myself throughout all my years of public service, and this is the path along which we have educated entire generations.
“Therefore, having received today the unequivocal directive of the esteemed rabbis and sages of the Council of Torah Sages, I accept it without hesitation or question. I thank the esteemed rabbis and sages for the trust and support they have given me throughout the years.
“Tomorrow, God willing, I will convene a faction meeting with the movement’s Knesset members and our senior representatives in local authorities, in order to roll up our sleeves, draw lessons from recent events, and move the movement forward.”
Hasson says broadcaster demanded an on-air statement: Ayala Hasson said the public broadcasting corporation’s head of news gave her what she described as an illegal ultimatum following her poorly worded remarks about Bedouin society: read a statement he dictated word for word on air, or be barred from hosting her program.
Hasson said the statement distorted her words and humiliated her. She questioned whether the demand was connected to what she described as a politically motivated smear campaign against her in recent days, and said she would not broadcast that evening.
