Military preparations and Qatari mediation over Iran: The U.S. military is finalizing preparations for a possible resumption of major combat operations against Iran, including the deployment of additional military assets to the region, Axios reports.
Qatari mediators are working to secure a U.S.-Iranian agreement aimed at preventing renewed fighting and potentially resuming direct negotiations in the coming days.
Diplomatic sources told Axios: “Iran’s boasting about the midterm election results could push US President Trump to return to war”.
Axios also reports that U.S. Vice President JD Vance previously accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in private of ‘being wrong on everything’ regarding Iran. Vance had warned that the war was highly unpopular and could cost Republicans the election.
Lapid distinguishes opposition to Israel from opposition to its government: “There’s no question that the anti-Israel core in the House of Representatives has grown,” former Prime Minister Yair Lapid said following the Democratic sweep in the U.S. midterms.
Lapid nevertheless argued that an opening remains with reasonable Democrats: “These people aren’t against Israel. They’re against extremist ministers who say crazy things.”
He emphasized: “they’re against Netanyahu.”
⚓ South Korea plans military deployment to help keep Hormuz open: South Korea’s Defense Ministry said: “Seoul intends to send military forces to help ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open”.
Houthis demand $51 billion and recognition from Saudi Arabia: The Houthis have demanded $51 billion from Saudi Arabia and official recognition as Yemen’s rulers in exchange for ending hostilities, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The Houthis say the payment would compensate for years of Saudi airstrikes and a blockade. Riyadh fears that accepting the demands could encourage further attacks and additional financial demands.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is reluctant to negotiate without securing military gains. He also fears that deploying more ground troops could result in heavy casualties and domestic backlash.
Israel RealTime analysis: If Saudi Arabia pays the Houthis and recognizes their rule in exchange for an end to attacks, the group could see military pressure as a successful negotiating tactic. That could encourage more attacks whenever it wants additional money or political concessions.
The same concern applies to U.S.–Iran negotiations. Any agreement would need credible guarantees that attacks will stop and commitments can be verified. Otherwise, concessions could buy a temporary pause while leaving the incentive to threaten further disruption in place.
The report does not establish that Tehran is using the Houthis to test this approach. But the outcome could influence what Iran and its allies believe they can gain through military pressure.
